Geoff Moore & The Distance
It's been quite a journey for Geoff Moore & the Distance since the group began recording for ForeFront Records in 1990: including Dove Awards and Grammy nominations, and one hit after another on Christian radio-not to mention the tens of thousands of miles of touring on the concert circuit, carrying their unique message. And so now, hot on the heels of last year's Greatest Hits record and this year's Dove Award for best long-form video(Roadwork), Geoff and the band have decided to take the road less traveled for their exciting new Threads album.
"We went about making this record very differently than any other we had made before," explains Geoff. "Normally, we cut one or two extra tracks for an album project, maybe. But this time, at some level, we cut over 20 tracks."
Geoff Moore & the Distance began their work on Threads by taking a portable recording studio with them on tour back in September of last year. "We were writing in dressing rooms, hallways, locker rooms and during sound checks." By the end of the year, they had come up with a plethora of ideas and songs, many of which appear on Threads.
But the big difference in the making of Threads was the place that Geoff and the band found themselves at the end of last year-both spiritually and professionally.
"I think a lot of times, opportunity and success can sometimes be the enemy of somebody trying to lead a faithful life."
"It all started with my trying to come to grips with what kind of record I wanted to make, before I ever started-or whether I should try to make another record at all," reflects Geoff. "I think a lot of times, opportunity and success can sometimes be the enemy of somebody trying to lead a faithful life. I've done this for a long time, and there is an element of it that's kind of vocational, and that's something that I've really tried to steer away from. So I started with that thought; 'Should I make another album? And if I should, what should it be about, musically and lyrically? And what should my touring look like?' So, I went into the process really trying to seek the Lord and trying to come to grips with what He's trying to tell me. What I emerged with was that I should do some things differently, really stretch myself."
And what a stretch! The opening track blasts off with the Pete Townsend penned "I'm Free," which states the message of Threads in a challenging, "come get what I have if you dare" attitude.
"I've always been open to cover stuff," says Geoff of the song. "It just has to be the right thing. I was a huge fan of The Who growing up, and when you find a song that's got that kind of fire and passion, and you feel like it's got a vision musically that you want to recreate, and a lyric that can really be interpreted well within the context of what we're trying to say in Threads, it just seemed natural."
Geoff uses the title song, Threads, which he co-wrote with Steven Curtis Chapman and DC Talk's Toby McKeehan (a duet partner on the song), to illustrate how he feels about his place in the grand scheme of things. "I wanted to make music that not only reflected who I was," says Geoff, "but also reflected a lot of the reality that we are a community of human beings, even the unbelievers, and that we are sewn together in our day-to-day experiences. But also that there is a great unity that comes, you know, the scarlet thread that holds us together."
Without a doubt, Threads, is the most bare-skinned, intense work that Geoff Moore & the Distance have ever done. Not in the sense that it is maudlin or somber, but in the sense that it constitutes a gut level expose of a personal and professional inventory-taking of one of Christian music's most dynamic forces. It is brutal in its' honesty, poignant in its' delivery, and powerful in its' message. "I really feel top to bottom, this is the best piece of work we have ever done," Geoff asserts. "I think that this is the first album that I have ever listened to all the way through where I felt that it said what I set out to say from the very beginning."
